अधमा  मातुलात् ख्याता: श्वशुराच्चाधमाधमा:
Worst are ones who are famous because their uncle, even worse are those who are (famous) because of their father-in-laws!

चिता चिंता समायुक्ते बिन्दुमात्रं विशेषता |
When चिता and चिंता are put together, there is only a dot (ं) of speciality/difference/addition.

सजीवं दहते चिंता निर्जीवं दहते चिता ||
चिंता burns alive where are चिता burns without life!

तात्पर्य: - There is little difference between worried-man and a dead-body.
A person with चिंता (worry) burns one alive, where as a dead-body(चिता) burns without life!

Deer (or other animals) do not simply walk into a sleeping Lion's mouth!

ऋणशेषोsग्निशेषश्च शत्रुशेषस्तथैव च |
The remainder of a loan, fire and enemy


पुन:पुनः प्रवर्धन्ते तस्माच्छेषं न रक्षयेत् ||
grow and increase from time to time and hence, the remainder should never be saved.

Taatparya: A loan, a fire and an enemy, should always be completely repaid/extinguished/destroyed and not left to remain: as the remainder always grows and increases from time to time, and are always threatening.

Un-doable is thought to-be-done (kartavya), un-achievable is thought to be easily-achievable

अभक्ष्यं मन्यतॆ भक्ष्यम् स्त्रीवाक्य प्रेरितो नर: ||
Un-edible is thought to-be-eaten when a man is influenced by a woman's words!

The subhaashitakaara highlights (and in pun) the strong influence of woman's words on a man.

Cows give milk for others' benevolence, this human body itself is for others' help!

Grapes became withered, Sugar crystals became stones.

सुभाषित रसं दृष्ट्वा सुधा भीता दिवं गता ||
Looking the taste/essense of 'subhaashita', the nectar ran away feared to heaven!

At times, harder than diamond and sometimes, softer than a flower.

लोकोत्तराणाम्  चेतांसि कोsहि विज्ञातुमर्हति ||
Who can (gauge) know, (what runs through) mahatmas' minds!

The subhaashitakaara intends to advocate that one (like a mahatma),
needs to be tough in demanding situations as well as be sensitive at times.

केयूराणि न भूषयन्ति पुरुषं हारा न चंद्रोज्वाला:|
Diamonds do not ornate a man, nor do necklaces with moon's glitter.

न स्नानं न विलेपनं न कुसुमं नालंकृता मूर्धजा ||
Not having a bath, not a perfume, not a flower, neither does specially decorated hair.

वाण्येका समलंकरोति पुरुषं या संस्कृता धार्यते |
Only the words that carry culture, dress-up a man sharp.

क्षीयन्तो खलु भूषणानि सततं वाग्भूषणं भूषणम् ||
All the other ornaments recede, the only lasting ornament is 'oration'.

The subhaashitakaara emphasizes the importance of cultured speech and it's prominence over material ornaments which do little to highlight a man's stature.

A crow, upon seeing food, invites many other crows, a beggar doesn't (invite) other beggars.

काक याचकयोर्मध्ये वरं काको न याचक: ||
Between a crow and a beggar, a crow is preferred, not a beggar.

तात्पर्य: - One needs to share among the equally needy.

From seconds and grains, knowledge and wealth can be acquired.

क्षणत्यागे कुतो विद्या कणत्यागे कुतो धनम्  ||
Letting time go, yields no knowledge and grains sacrificed, yields no money!

The subhaashitakaara is emphasizing here, on the importance of time and money, wisely spent and not being wasted.

Knowledge (education) brings a man more beauty, it is 'the' secret and in-expendable wealth.
विद्या भोगकरी यशः सुखकरी विद्या गुरूणाम् गुरु: ॥
Knowledge brings comforts, fame and wellness, knowledge is the guru of gurus.
विद्या बंधुजनो विदेश गमने विद्या परा देवता ।
Knowledge is your relative when you travel abroad, knowledge is the highest deity.
विद्या राजसु पूजते न तु धनं विद्या विहीन: पशु: ||
Knowledge is worshipped among kings and not wealth.
A man without knowledge/education is nothing but an animal.

Every rock does not have a precious stone, every elephant does not have a pearl.

साधवो नहि सर्वत्र चन्दनं न वने वने ||
Every forest does not have sandalwood, likewise, not everywhere there are saints!

तात्पर्य: -> Saints are not everywhere, it is upto us to identify and grasp the precious ones whenever, wherever we find one and get the good knowledge by satsang.

तात्पर्य: -> One needs to keep moving in order to make progress.
One should not expect something to happen without a move.
